 2. Presentation
I .Can (do): Là một động từ tình thái được dùng khi nói đến 1 việc nào đó có thể xảy ra hoặc 1 người nào đó có khả năng làm 1 việc gì.
+ Can cũng giống như các ĐT tình thái khác, V đi sau nó là 1 ĐT nguyên mẫu không có TO.
+ Để y/cầu có được 1 điều gì, chúng ta có thể nói: 
 Can I have ... ? / Could I have ... ?
+ Can / Could còn được dùng khi xin phép & cho phép làm 1 điều gì.
 Eg: - Can/ Could I speak to Mr. Nam, please ?
Can/Could I use your pen ? – Yes, you can. 
2. Use of could/may/might:
Chỉ khả năng có thể xảy ra ở hiện tại nhưng người nói không dám chắc. (Cả 3 trợ động từ đều có giá trị như nhau).
It might rain tomorrow.
It may rain tomorrow.
It could rain tomorrow.
It will possibly rain tomorrow 
Maybe it will rain tomorrow.
Chú ý may be là sự kết hợp của cả may và be nhưng nó là một từ và không phải là trợ động từ. Nó là một phó từ, có nghĩa như perhap (có lẽ)
3. Use of Should:
(1) Để diễn đạt một lời khuyên, sự gợi ý, sự bắt buộc (nhưng không mạnh).
 (2) Diễn đạt người nói mong muốn điều gì sẽ xảy ra. (Expectation)
Các cụm từ had better, ought to, be supposed to đều có nghĩa tương đương và cách dùng tương tự với should trong cả hai trường hợp trên (với điều kiện động từ be trong be supposed to phải chia ở thời hiện tại).
4. Use of Must
(1) Có nghĩa “phải”: mang nghĩa hoàn toàn bắt buộc (mạnh hơn should). Với should (nên), nhân vật có thể lựa chọn có thực hiện hành động hay không nhưng với must (phải), họ không có quyền lựa chọn.        
 An attorney must pass an examination before practicing law. 
        (Luật sư phải qua một kỳ kiểm tra trước khi hành nghề)
(2) Có nghĩa “hẳn là”, “chắc đó”: chỉ một kết luận logic dựa trên những hiện tượng đó xảy ra.
5. Use of have to
Người ta dùng have to thay cho must với nghĩa bắt buộc (nghĩa 1). Qúa khứ của nó là had to, tương lai là will have to. Chú ý rằng have to không phảI là một trợ động từ nhưng nó mang ý nghĩa giống như trợ động từ 
               - Receptionist: No, you needn't. But you have to leave your I.D card. I'm sorry but that's the way it is.
Trong văn nói người tadùng have got to, cũng có nghĩa như have to.

Dear Jack,
