On 6 August 1945, an atomic bomb was exploded over Hiroshima, a city in Japan. One of the survivors was two-year-old Sadako Sasaki. But ten years later, Sadako fell ill with leukaemia. As she became sicker, she remembered an old legend. If a sick person folded thousand paper cranes, the God would make him well again. Sadako started to fold paper cranes but she died when she hadn’t finished her work. After that her classmates then published a book of letters which Sadako had written to tell them about her wish for peace. As the story of Sadako has spread, the paper crane has also become known around the world as a symbol of peace. The story speaks to young readers of the tragedy of Sadako’s dealth and makes a universal statement for peace in the world.
