Description of Levels of Recognition and Orientation for Ability and Character Development Levels Activities Knowledge Comprehension Low application (level 1) High application (level 2) Activity 1 Listen to a conversation between two friends, Sam and Ann and guess what Sam and Ann are talking about. Activity 2 Understand the conversation through comprehension questions. Activity 3 Focus on compound nouns. Activity 4 Read the conversation again to find seven other compound nouns. Activity 5 Read the conversation again, and find the verbs expressing duty, obligation, advice, or lack of obligation. Activity 6 Practice initial speaking, using the ideas from the conversation and Ss' own ideas. III. Preparation of Teacher and Students 1. Teacher’s preparation - Teaching aids: Student’s book, Teacher’s book, pictures, blackboard, chalk. - CDs & CD player. 2. Students’ preparation - Student’s book and notebook. IV. Procedure: ACTIVITY .Warm-up (5 minutes) .-Tell Ss that these differences can be in the choice of music, clothing, values, lifestyles, ways of shopping (directly from shopping centres or online), or communication - Ask Ss questions about the picture: This is a photo of a big family. Who are the people in the photo? Is this type of family popular in your community? - Elicit answers from Ss. Lead-in: Inform the class of the lesson objectives: getting to know the topic, vocabulary about the generation gap and family rules, two grammar points: should and ought to for giving opinions and advice, and must and have to for expressing obligation. -To start the lesson, write the title of the unit THE GENERATION GAP on the board and ask Ss to list examples showing the gap between different generations. - Tell Ss that these differences can be in the choice of music, clothing, values, lifestyles, ways of shopping (directly from shopping centres or online), or communication. - Ask Ss questions about the picture: This is a photo of a big family. Who are the people in the photo? Is this type of family popular in your community? - Elicit answers from Ss. ACTIVITY 1. Listen and Read (8 minutes) 1. Aims: To help Ss concentrate in listening to a conversation between two friends. 2. Techniques: Work individually. 3. Approaches: Listening. 4. Teaching aids: CDs & CD player, Student’s book, Teacher’s book. - Tell Ss that they are going to listen to a conversation between two friends, Sam and Ann. - Let Ss guess what Sam and Ann are talking about. - Play the recording. Ss listen to the conversation and read along. - Tell Ss not to worry about new language items as they will have a chance to come back to them later on. ACTIVITY 2. Decide the Statements true (T) or false (F) (5 minutes) 1. Aims: To help Ss understand the conversation through comprehension questions. 2. Techniques: Individually. 3. Approaches: Reading. 4. Teaching aids: Student’s book, Teacher’s book. - Ask Ss to read the statements and decide if they are true (T) or false (F) and refer to the conversation to find clues for their answers. - Check Ss' answers. Expected answers: 1.F 2. F 3.T 4. F 5.T ACTIVITY 3. Complete the Definitions (6 minutes) 1. Aims: To help Ss understand the conversation through comprehension questions. 2. Techniques: Individually. 3. Approaches: Reading. 4. Teaching aids: Student’s book, Teacher’s book. - Ask them to complete the definitions, using the highlighted compound nouns in the conversation. - Ask Ss to check answers in pairs. - Check Ss’answers. Expected answers: 1. A nuclear family 3. A generation gap 5. A viewpoint 2. Childcare 4. Table manners 6. An extended family ACTIVITY 4. Find the Compound Nouns (5 minutes) 1. Aims: To help Ss understand the compound nouns. 2. Techniques:Work individually, in pairs / groups. 3. Approaches: Reading. 4. Teaching aids: Student’s book, Teacher’s book. - Ask Ss to read the conversation again to find seven other compound nouns. - Allow Ss to use a dictionary to look up the meanings of the compound nouns. - Tell Ss to compare their answers in pairs / groups. - Then check answers as a class. Expected answers: grandparents, grandma, grandpa, grandmother, hairstyle, housework, footsteps. ACTIVITY 5. Find Verbs (5 minutes) 1. Aims: To help Ss focus on should, ought to, must and have to.. 2. Techniques: Work in pairs / groups. 3. Approaches: Reading. 4. Teaching aids: Student’s book, Teacher’s book. - Ask Ss to read the conversation again to find verbs expressing duty, obligation, advice. - Tell Ss to compare their answers in pairs / groups. - Then check answers as a class. Expected answers: + Opinion and advice: should, ought to. + Duty and obligation: must, have to. + Lack of obligation: not have to, not need to. ACTIVITY 6. Ask and Answer (8 minutes) 1. Aims: To provide initial speaking practice. 2. Techniques:Work in pairs / groups. 3. Approaches: Speaking. 4. Teaching aids: Student’s book, Teacher’s book. - Ask Ss to work in pairs, practise asking and answering the questions given using the ideas from the conversation and Ss’ own ideas. - Have some Ss tell the class about their partners' type of family and what they like and dislike about it. Expected answers: 1. I’m a part of a nuclear/extended family. 2. I learn a lot of skills from my grandparents. V. Consolidation and Homework 1.Consolidation (2 minutes) - Summarize the main points: Getting to know the topic, the vocabulary items related and modals. 2. Homework (1 minute) - Practise the conversation, asking and answering questions. - Prepare for the next lesson. VI.
