CÁC QUI TẮC TRỌNG ÂM
Để phát âm chính xác, ngoài việc nắm rõ cách phát âm các âm tiết của từ chúng ta cần phải biết rõ cách đặt trọng âm của từ.
Có một số qui tắc cơ bản về trọng âm của từ:
+ mỗi từ có một trọng âm chính duy nhất
+ Chỉ có trọng âm ở nguyên âm chứ không có ở phụ âm.
+ Trọng âm không rơi vào âm tiết có chứa nguyên âm /∂/ ít khi rơi vào âm tiết chứa âm /I/, thường rơi vào âm tiết có chứa âm đôi hoặc âm dài.
Sau đây là một vài quy tắc tương đối đơn giản hơn có thể giúp chúng ta biết được cách đặt đúng trọng âm từ.
Quy tắc 1: Trọng âm của từ có hai âm tiết
1. Đa số các danh từ và tính từ có 2 âm tiết thì trọng âm chính được nhấn vào âm tiết thứ nhất.

Ngoại lệ: Những danh từ, tính từ có âm thứ nhất chứa âm /I/ hoặc /ə/ thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2.
Eg: ca’det: con thứ , pos’sess : sở hữu, Gui’tar, Di’vine : Thiêng liêng
ma’chine, mis’take, re’sult, e’ffect, a’lone , ca’nal, ma’ture
2: Đa số các động từ có 2 âm tiết thì trọng âm chính được nhấn vào âm tiết thứ 2

Ngoại lệ:Những động từ có âm thứ 2 chứa âm /I/, /ə/ hoặc /əu/ thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết đầu tiên.
Eg: ‘offer, ’happen, ’answer, ’enter, ’listen, ’open, ’publish, ’finish, ’follow, ’argue .
3. Một số từ 2 âm tiết vừa là danh từ, vừa là động từ 
 3.1. Trọng âm chính không đổi: 
 Eg: ad’vice/ ad’vise, ‘visit, re’ply, ‘travel,
 ‘Promise, ‘picture 
3.2.Trọng âm thay đổi theo từ loại
 danh từ có trọng âm chính ở âm tiết đầu tiên còn động từ có trọng âm ở âm tiết thứ 2.

Đối với danh từ, tính từ.
- Rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất nếu âm giữa và âm cuối chứa nguyên âm ngắn và kết thúc không quá 1 phụ âm.
Eg: Cinema, animal, enemy, 
- Rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2 nếu âm cuối chứa nguyên âm ngắn hoặc /əu/, âm giữa chứa nguyên âm dài hoặc âm đôi hoặc kết thúc hơn 1 phụ âm.
Eg: disaster, banana, potato, pagoda, mimosa, .
Đối với động từ
Rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2 khi âm cuối chứa nguyên âm ngắn hoặc kết thúc không quá 1 phụ âm.
Eg: establish, consider, determine, encounter, remember.
Rơi vào âm tiết thứ 3 nếu âm thứ 3 chứa nguyên âm đôi hoặc âm dài hay kết thúc hơn 1 phụ âm.
Eg: entertain, resurect,..
Quy tắc 3: Trọng âm đối với từ có tiền tố, hậu tố.
Từ có tiền tố
 Hầu hết các tiền tố khi thêm vào không làm thay đổi trọng âm chính của từ đó.
1/ un- : ‘healthy à un’healthy,
 im’portant à unim’portant 
2/ im- : ma’ture à imma’ture, 
 ‘patient à im’patient
3/ in- : com’plete à incom’plete, 
 sin’cere à insin’cere 
4/ ir- : ‘relevant à ir’relevant, 
 re’ligious à irre’ligious 
5/ dis : con’nect à discon’nect, 
 ‘courage à dis’courage  
6/ non- : ‘smokers à non’smokers,
 ‘violent à non’violent
7/ en- : ‘courage à en’courage, 
 ‘vision à en’vision

9/ over- : ‘crowded à over’crowded,

Từ có hậu tố.
a. Một số hậu tố không làm thay đổi trọng âm của từ.

c. Các từ có tận cùng bằng các hậu tố sau có trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết cách hậu tố đó 1 âm tiết.

2/ -ary : ‘necessary, ‘military ,dictionary...
3/ -ize: modernize, recognize
Ngoại lệ : docu’mentary, ele’mentary, supple’mentary, ex’traordinary.
d. Những hậu tố sau thường được nhận trọng âm chính.
1/ -ee : de’gree, refe’ree...
2/ -eer : mountai’ner, engi’neer...
3/ -ese : Japa’nese, Chi’nese ...
4/ -ain (chỉ áp dụng cho động từ) : re’main, con’tain...
5/ -aire : questio’naire, millio’naire...
6/ -ique : tech’nique, an’tique...
7/ -esque : pictu’resque.. 
8/ - oo, oon: bam’boo, bal’loon, kanga’roo
Ngoại lệ : com’mittee, ‘coffee
Một số từ có trọng âm thay đổi khi từ loại của chúng thay đổi.
Eg: e’conomy (n)-> eco’nomic(a)
‘Industry (n) -> in’dustrial (a)
Photograp(n) -> pho’tography, photo’graphic, photo’genic..
Quy tắc 4: Trọng âm ở các từ ghép
 1. Hầu hết danh từ ghép và tính từ ghép có trọng âm chính rơi vào âm tiết đầu tiên.
 ‘dishwasher, ‘filmmaker, ‘typewriter, ‘praiseworthy, ‘waterproof, ‘lightning-fast 
Ngoại lệ : duty-’free, snow-’white
2.Tính từ ghép có từ đầu tiên là tính từ hoặc trạng từ thì trọng âm chính rơi vào từ thứ 2, tận cùng là động từ phân từ 2.
 well-’done, well-’informed, short-’sighted, 
 bad-’tempered
3. Các trạng từ và động từ ghép có trọng âm chính rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2. 
 up’stairs, down’stairs
